West Fairlee – Mrs. Alice E. Alger Adams, 96, died peacefully at home on March 13, 2017 following a brief struggle with her declining health. She was born February 23, 1921 in E. Ryegate, VT., the daughter of Joseph R. Alger and Laura Rowe Alger.

                She graduated from Bradford Academy in 1939, and YWCA School of Domestic Science, Boston, MA in 1940. Alice married Raymond (Bob) H. Adams on February 3, 1946 at the Alger home in Fairlee, VT., and started their life together at their home on Adams Square, Fairlee, VT.

                During the construction of the Fairlee/Orford bridge, she was her mother’s chief helper in preparing and serving meals seven days a week in their home. During WWII, she worked in a defense factory in Springfield, MA on tank parts and aerosol bombs for mosquitoes in the South Pacific. After the war and before her marriage, Alice worked for numerous stores and restaurants in Fairlee: Chapman’s Drug Store, Fairlee Diner, E.L. Sanborn’s, Kettledrum, Degoosh’s, Bonnie Oakes, Rutledge Inn, and Darlings Market. She worked with Jack Webb putting on minstrel shows at the Fairlee Town Hall.

                Alice was a member of the Order of Easter Star, Rondo, Vermont Society of Mayflower Descendants, Vermont Historical Society, Vermont Sunshine Society and VOCA. She served as President of the Community Circle and co-chair of Fairlee PTA. She was a member of the Fairlee Federated Church for 83 years where she played the organ, served and worked with the choir and Sunday school pageants. She served as Girl Scout leader as well as.

                In 1968, the construction of Interstate #91 required them to relocate, and they moved to W. Fairlee. There they built a new house. In W. Fairlee, Alice served as assistant town clerk and delivered mail for the USPS. Alice enjoyed gardening, walks, hiking, picnics, homemaking, sewing, cooking, baking, going out to eat, traveling, and entertaining guests in her home.

                Survivors include her daughter, Charlotte Adams and her friend Robert Lareau of Fairlee, VT, three sons, David Adams of Poultney, VT, Earl Adams and his wife Dona of Corinth, and R. Fred Adams and his wife Denise of Thetford Center, VT., four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She leaves numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Raymond H. Adams in 1998, five brothers, John Alger, Howard Alger, Donald Alger, Francis Alger, and Ivan Alger, and a granddaughter, Rachel Adams.

                There will be no calling hours. A public celebration of her life will be held at 1 PM on June 3, 2017 at the Fairlee Community Church with a reception following. Her ashes will be buried next to her husband in the Fairlee Cemetery.
