Bradford, VT-Phyllis Louise Lavelle, 93, of Main Street in Bradford died Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH.
She was born December 10, 1923 in Lawrence, MA the daughter of Nelson Luther and Alice Mae (Keyes) Doe. She attended schools in Huntington, NY, and was a 1941 graduate of Huntington High School in Huntington, NY. After high school, Mrs. Lavelle attended Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
On August 23, 1942 she married Bernard J. Lavelle of Huntington, NY. During the war years, Mrs. Lavelle moved about the country with her husband and family, returning to Huntington in 1946 where she spent 35 years raising her family. During those years, Mrs. Lavelle was active in the Central Presbyterian Church of Huntington, NY, the Girl Scouts, the United States Neptune Power Squadron, the PTA and other community activities. She was a member of the Wyncote Yacht Club where she enjoyed boating and water sports with friends. She was an avid scuba diver for many years. For 15 years, she had been employed as a bookkeeper for several automotive dealerships in the Huntington, NY area.
In 1981, she and her husband retired to a family home in Bradford, where Mrs. Lavelle was active in community life. Her memberships included the Grace United Methodist Church, the Friendship Club, the Bradford Historical Society, the Handbell Choir, and the 1991 Bradford Bicentennial Celebration Committee. She had also served six years as a Bradford village trustee, and was instrumental in the construction of the village bandstand on the common. She was an active hiker in the woods and mountains of Vermont, and enjoyed gardening, handiwork, and entertaining friends at her home. During her retirement years, she and her husband were frequent travelers all over the world, and enjoyed sharing their photographs with friends and family.
Mrs. Lavelle is survived by one daughter, Marialyce Doe Lavelle of Atlanta, GA; two sons, Bernard Nelson Lavelle of Bradford, VT and John Henry Lavelle of Albany, NY; and two grandsons. She is predeceased by her husband Bernard Lavelle.
A Remembrance Tea in her memory will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church at a later date.
