Verna A. Estes

Following her graduation from Thetford Academy in 1948, Verna enrolled in the nursing program at Gifford Memorial Hospital in Randolph, VT. She continued her education at Fitchburg School of Nursing in Fitchburg, MA and returned to Gifford Memorial Hospital where she graduated with an R.N. degree. In 1954 she married her high school sweetheart, Henry W. Estes. They made their home and raised their family in Post Mills living there together for 59 years. As a faithful member of the Post Mills Congregational Church she served on several boards, including the Board of Deacons. She viewed her commitment to the church community as service to God. It was common to see her in the church kitchen preparing for suppers or helping out at Christmas bazaars. In 1963 Verna developed bacterial spinal meningitis which resulted in the complete loss of her hearing. Despite this, she was able to raise her three children, devote her life to the church and community and do the things she loved to do. Verna enjoyed baking and making treats for her neighbors, friends and family. Her specialties were pizzelles, doughnuts and English toffee. She was an avid reader and a meticulous knitter. She enjoyed the natural world around her. Verna looked forward to the bluebirds coming and making their nests each spring. She also enjoyed working in her beautiful perennial garden. She was a member of the Lake Fairlee Chapter of the Eastern Star where she attained the office of Worthy Matron. Verna was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother who gave much of her love and care to her family. She is survived by her husband Henry (Pete) of Post Mills; her son Mark and his wife, Dianne of West Lebanon, NH; her son Peter and his wife, Cathy of Post Mills; Cathy Roberts, and her husband, Joseph of Post Mills; her 4 grandchildren, Tyler Estes, Caitlin Roberts, Logan Estes and Sarah Roberts. A Memorial Service will be held at the Post Mills Congregational Church on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Heidi Hoskin officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Visiting Nursing and Hospice of VT/NH, 66Benning St., Ste.6, West Lebanon, NH 03784.
