Arthur James Young

Bradford, VT- Arthur James Young, 80, died on October 21, 2012 at Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, NH. Arthur was born at home in Bradford, VT on December 24, 1931 to William and Marjorie (Thompson) Young. He was the fourth on six children. Arthur graduated from Bradford Academy in 1949. He joined the United States Navy during the Korean War, but did not get a chance to serve. From the 1950's to early 1980's he was the manager of a growing grocery store in Bradford. It started as the Red and White on Main Street and ended up the P&C on lower plains in Bradford. From the 1980's until he retired, he worked as a wholesale grocer for French and Bean in St. Johnsbury, VT and AG of New England in Manchester, NH. He did not enjoy retirement, so he went to work as the custodian at the Bradford Academy Building. He also started Turkey Hill Apiaries with close friends Butch Donnelly and David Morin. He loved beekeeping and selling honey and beeswax candles at local farmers markets. He also loved wintering in Silver Springs, Florida. Arthur married Fonnie Melendy on August 9, 1953. He built their home in Bradford, with his own hands. Fonnie predeceased him on August 4, 1991. He attentively cared for her, during many years of illness. Arthur was an avid golfer, gardener, and dancer. He loved people and was a member for forty-seven years and past master of Charity Lodge # 43 F&AM in Bradford, VT. He was also very active in the Bradford American Legion. In Florida, he joined the Ocala Dance Club. He is survived by their daughter Holly Young of Bradford, VT; and her son Ian Crawford-Young; and one step-daughter, Coney Tatro and her husband Stanley of Barnet, VT as well as their daughter, Vickey Blaisdell and son Tobey Tatro, both of North Haverhill, NH; two brothers, Lyle Young and wife Karen of Klamath Falls, Oregon and Edmund Young and wife Janet of Haines City, FL; one sister, Marjorie Young Solomon of St. Petersburg, FL and one sister-in-law, Jean Putnam Young of Sarasota, FL. He was predeceased by two brothers Robert Young, husband of Jean Putnam Young and William Gordon Young as well as his wife Irene of Sarasota, Florida. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 11 am in the Bradford United Church of Christ. There are no calling hours. Burial will follow the service in the family lot in the Sawyer Cemetery in Bradford, VT. In lieu of flowers or donations, please do a kindness for a loved one.
