Waits River, VTMargaret G. (Hartley) Batten of Honey Corner Road passed away Thursday afternoon (November 30, 2017) at the home of her daughter Mary in Concord, VT. She was 93.Born on July 1, 1924 in Bradford, VT, she was the daughter of Wallace L. and Alice M. (Morey) Hartley.Margaret attended Bradford Elementary School and was a 1943 graduate of the Bradford Academy. During high school years, she worked at the Bradford 5 + 10 store and years following.On May 19, 1944, she was united in marriage to her school sweetheart Gardner C. Batten. They were married for 63 years, residing in Waits River until his passing on July 31, 2007.Margaret was employed as a teacher's aide at Union 36 Waits River Elementary School for many years.Over the years, she was active with the Waits River United Methodist Church serving as President of the United Methodist Women, Church School teacher, and superintendent. She was also a charter member of the Hill and Vale Mothers Club.Besides her parents and husband, she is pre-deceased by a daughter Virginia Batten, a great-grandson Robert E. Batten, and a brother Ernest Hartley, Sr.She leaves two sons Leslie Batten and wife Rev. Cynthia Batten of Londonderry, NH and West Newbury, VT and Randall Batten and wife Lorie of West Topsham, VT; two daughters Linda Putney and husband Roland of Websterville, VT and Mary Batten and spouse Lynette Cash of Concord, VT; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1pm Saturday, December 16, at the New Hope United Methodist Church, Rte 25, Waits River. Rev. Candice Ricker will officiate.
