Sidney Leighton Cook, age 93, a life-long resident of Norwich passed away on January 12, 2015 at the Pines Health Care and Rehabilitation in Lyndonville, VT. He was born in Norwich on December 10, 1921 the son of Rowe Franklin Cook and Myrtie Hazel Hoyt Cook. He attended school at the Root District School house and graduated from Hanover High School. He served in the Army during World War II spending 2 A½ years in the South Pacific. Upon his return from the service, he married Ruth Tyler on June 11, 1946. He was a man of many talents and worked in many different fields. He was an auto-body man, owned his own business for several years, and as many Norwich residents will remember, spent the last 20 years of his career as the Crossing Guard and custodian of the Town Hall in Norwich. He loved children and took great pleasure in watching both his own grandchildren and great grandchildren and the children he saw everyday on their way to Marion Cross School. He also raised a big garden and beef cattle on the family farm and made maple syrup. He served the Town of Norwich in many different capacities during his lifetime. At various times, he was the Town Constable, served on the Selectboard, and served as Road Commissioner. He was honored in 1998 by the Norwich Grange as "citizen of the year." He was a member of the Union Village Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Norwich Historical Society. In addition, he and his wife enjoyed dancing with the Ed Larkin Dancers of Chelsea for many years. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth T. Cook; his sisters, Shirley Clogston and Irma Renehan; his son-in-law Michael Freeman;a granddaughter; his grandson-in-law, George Oickle, and his great-grandson, Ryan Oickle. He leaves his children Daniel Cook of Norwich and his wife Debra Cook, Carole Freeman of East Corinth, and Becky Cook and her husband Ted Boze of Norwich. In addition, he leaves 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held March 28th at the Union Village Methodist Church. Details about the memorial service will be announced at a later date.
