Thetford Center, VT- Doris May (Fifield) Cowden, 94, died peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at Valley Terrace in White River Junction, VT. She was born at the family home in Thetford Center, VT a daughter of Glenwood and Rose (Amell) Fifield.Doris lived in Thetford Center for most of her life except for her wartime employment at Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, CT where she met her future husband, James Cowden. They were married on Valentine's Day in 1944 and soon moved back to Thetford Center to build their own home and start their life together. They remained together for 60 his death in 2004.She became a devoted member of the Timothy Frost Methodist Church in Thetford Center (United Church of Thetford) in 1942 and later taught Sunday school there. Doris was an avid supporter of fund raising activities for both the Church and the Community. She was a longtime member of the Thetford Center Community Association and was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever she was needed. Doris was also a wonderful cook who shared her food and table with everyone. She loved flower and vegetable gardening and special times with her family and friends. She even found time to participate in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Grand Chapter of Vermont Order of Eastern Star of West Fairlee, VT.Doris worked in the Alumni Records Department at Dartmouth College for many years. She loved this work and made new friends there, several of whom she stayed in touch with over her retirement years. After her retirement from the College she and Jim actively supported the the White River Council on Aging's Meals On Wheels programfor several years.She leaves her daughter Bonnie Morrissey of Stow MA, her sister Margaret Southworth of Port Charlotte FL and granddaughter Casey Morrissey of Leominster MA.There will be a Memorial Service for Doris in the spring of 2016.
