Fred E, Smith, 73 of Topsham Vt. passed away peacefully with family present at his home on Monday, July 29, 2013 following a brave battle with lung cancer. He was born on November 14, 1939 to Fred and Marjorie (Gilman) Smith. Fred was a lifelong resident of Topsham and attended the Topsham Village School. Fred married Barbara Spooner on September 14, 1958 and raised 5 children together. In his earlier years, Fred worked for Whiting's Dairy, the State of Vermont, Kelly Construction and later on spent 25 years with Rock of Ages as a Head Mechanic before retiring and starting his own business Mt. View Trucking. One of his greatest working achievements was his latest and current business known to many as the Smith Family Sugar House. Fred was involved in his community in many ways including Town Constable, Justice of the Peace, Tax Collector, Orange County Sherriff and an Elder of the Topsham Presbyterian Church. Fred was a believer of Jesus Christ and enjoyed sharing his faith. Fred enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He and Barbara opened their home to many of their nieces and nephews over the years. Fred is predeceased by his wife Barbara, and 3 brothers, Edward, Alvah, and Wayne. He is survived by his children Douglas Smith and companion Sheila Benior, Donna Schauer, Daryl Smith and wife Catherine, Diane Vallie and husband Charlie, Doreen Redman and husband GregA 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 4 brothers, Sydney Smith, Sheldon Smith, Stanley Smith and Louis Smith, along with several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11am Saturday, August 10 at the East Topsham Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the East Topsham Cemetery.
