Corinth, VT- Howard Allen "Buss" Carter, 90, of Corinth died Friday morning, January 24, 2014 at Blue Spruce Home for the Retired in Bradford, VT. Buss was born in Corinth, VT on October 5, 1923 to Nathan and Hazel (Ladd) Carter, the third of ten children. Buss lived in Vermont all his life, except the years he served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He graduated from Bradford Academy Class of 1941 and after his military service he was employed at the Department of Veteran Affairs in White River Jct., VT for thirty years retiring in 1978. After his retirement he moved back to his birthplace in Corinth. Buss served in many town positions both in Hartland and Corinth, VT. He was a sixty-seven year member of Minerva Lodge # 86 F&AM, Riverside Grange # 455, life member of the American Legion # 48 in Hartland, VT and New Hope United Methodist Church in Waits River, VT where he served as Treasurer and Trustee for many years. Buss enjoyed camping, especially the trip to Alaska, taking bus tours and snowmobiling. He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years Brenda, his son Allen and his wife Sheila of Virginia Beach, VA; his daughter, Carol Filfalt and husband Ronald of North Hartland, VT; his step-daughter, Sheila Smith and David Punt of Barton, VT, step-son, Scott Davis of Wilder, VT; one granddaughter, Emily Cox and husband Jonathan of Durham, NC and great grandson, Coltrane Cox; nieces , nephews, and cousins; his former wife Heilene Chapin of Lake Bomoseen , VT; his siblings, Betty Osgood of Thetford, VT., Ned Carter of Bradford, VT., Lynwood Carter of Dover, NH., and Jean Hodge of Bradford, VT. He was predeceased by six brothers and sisters, Fred, Lyle, Pauline, Maxine, Lavona and Derrol. Funeral services will be held at the New Hope United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 1 pm. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place in the family lot in the Corinth Center Cemetery in the spring. Some flowers will certainly be welcome, but if you prefer, donations in his memory may be made to the New Hope United Methodist Church or to the NARFE Alzheimer's Research Fund, c/o Francene Ellis, 723 Carpenter Road, Sharon, VT 05065.
