Iolabelle Hazel (Betty) Osgood

September 4, 1926 — October 6, 2022

Iolabelle Hazel (Betty) Carter Osgood 96, a resident of the Margaret Pratt Assisted Living Community, Bradford, VT, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, on Thursday, October 6 at Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care, Lebanon, NH. She was surrounded by members of her devoted and loving family.
Betty was born in the village of Cookville in Corinth, Vermont on September 4, 1926, the daughter of Nathan Taplin and Hazel (Ladd) Carter. She was one of ten children and was raised on the family farm. Betty attended schools in Corinth and Bradford, Vermont and after graduating from Bradford Academy, she went to work for National Life Insurance in Montpelier, VT.
She was married to Fritz William Osgood on May 10, 1948. After 34 years of marriage and seven children, they were divorced in November of 1982.
After 25+ years of loving care of her husband and 7 children, Betty decided it was time to get out of the house and she became a working mom to her younger children still left at home. She learned to drive, got her license and went to work in the “Tailor Shop” at Campions Department Store on Main Street, Hanover, NH. She was employed there for several years and then, in her 70s, when most folks are well into retirement, she opened her own tailor shop, “Betty’s Alterations” located in the Nugget Arcade Building, Hanover, NH. She successfully operated this business until 2015 when she retired at 89. During the last year of her operating the business, Betty was designated by WCAX television as a Super Senior and was featured on that news program. One of her favorite Hanover eateries and the place where she was a very regular daily customer was Lou’s Restaurant & Bakery in Hanover where she was a friend to all the staff. To this day, there is a special picture of Betty hanging on the wall in Lou’s.
Betty loved doing any craft project that involved working with her hands to produce beautiful finished projects. She loved counted cross stitch and created some very beautiful pictures. She also was constantly knitting all kinds of items. One of her favorite knitting projects was to knit warm mittens for area school children who were in need.
Betty was a faithful Christian and, over the years, served her church in many different roles. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible Schools, worked on the church dinners and participated in various other servant roles. She was also a member of her church’s Board of Deacons. This woman was always ready to help out and serve in Christ’s name.
But her greatest love and favorite activity was spending time with her family. She loved her family and was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Some of the fondest memories are of Betty with her family celebrated various family events. She was much loved and will be greatly missed by all her family.
Betty is survived by her 7 children, Fritz Daniel “Dan” Osgood of Greenfield N.H.; Steven Carter Osgood and his wife, Julie of Sheldon, VT; Gary Lee Osgood and his wife, Donna Cook of North Thetford, VT; Connie Jean Harlow and her husband, Allen of North Thetford, VT; Cathy Jane Hook of Scottsdale, AZ ; Candie Jan LaPerle and her husband, Norbert of Bradford, VT; and Stewart George Osgood and his companion Amy Erickson of Scottsdale, AZ.
