John Edward Clancy

Bradford, VT - J. Edward Clancy, 80, died Saturday, September 17 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on October 16, 1930 in Melrose, MA, the son of Patrick J. and Mary C. (Hurley) Clancy. He attended St. Mary's School in Melrose and was a 1948 graduate of Malden Catholic High School. He received a degree in Finance from Boston College in 1952. Mr. Clancy was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served in the Finance Corps as an instructor and Economics Course author at the Finance School at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. After his honorable discharge in 1954, he owned and operated Eddie's Food Mart in Melrose. On April 14, 1956, he married Doreen Waters, also of Melrose. In 1962 he began working for Sun Life of Canada in estate planning and life insurance sales. In 1983 they moved to Bradford, VT. He continued to work in Boston until his retirement in 1992. He owned and operated the Bradford Village Store for several years. Mr. Clancy was an Alderman-at-Large in Melrose, and served as President of the Board in 1976. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and was a founding member of the Orange Senior Independence Program in Newbury, VT. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doreen (Waters) of Bradford, VT, his children, Timothy, of Bradford, Mary Spain, of Bradford, Aileen MacDonnell and her husband Harry, of Leicester, MA, Daniel and his wife, Becky, of Bradford, David and his wife, Tammy, of Lempster, NH, 15 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren, two brothers, William of Lynnfield, MA and James of West Barnstable, MA, a sister Mary Vahey and dear family friend, Helen McCarthy, of Bow, NH. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and loving friends. He was predeceased by his brother Patrick of Arlington, MA. Visiting hours are Friday, September 23 from 5 - 8 pm at Hale Funeral Home, Upper Plain, Bradford, VT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, September 24, at 11 am, at our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bradford. Donations may be made in his memory to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, in care of Rev. Fr. Vincent Onunkwo, or to the Bradford Fast Squad, The Upper Valley Ambulance, The VNA of VT-NH, or to a charity of your choice.
