Newbury, VT- John F. George, 95, passed away peacefully on December 12th at his home in Newbury. He was born in Wells River, VT on May 22, 1921 the son of Marion (Bowen) and Dexter A. George."Johnny" as he was known to his family and friends graduated from Newbury High School in 1939. Upon graduation, he worked in various jobs over the next 3 years including as an auto mechanic at the former H O Taylor Chevrolet in Wells River as well as in the Burlington area. During that time, he also worked for the town of Newbury road crew. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After basic training, he was stationed stateside at bases in Alabama and Mississippi and was trained as a jet engine mechanic. In 1946, he was honorably discharged and came back to Newbury and took over the family farm. During his time farming, he was always taking on extra jobs including driving school bus for George Henderson and working at Henderson's garage. For those that can remember, Johnny plowed almost every driveway in town for many years and also provided manure and rototilling services in the spring for many gardens in town. He was known as being mild mannered and was well liked by everyone that knew him.After retiring from farming in 1985, he continued to hay in the summer until 1989. He then purchased a travel trailer and wintered for several years in Florida and Texas.He and his family were grateful that he could still be in the home he loved to the end, having lived there since he was 2 years old.He was predeceased by his parents and his Sister Bettina G. Hume. He is survived by his Sister Kay of Newbury, and his Nephews Richard & Greg of Bradford and Peter of Saco, ME and their families.There will be no services and burial will be private.The Hale Funeral Homes and Cremation Care of Bradford, VT are in charge of arrangements.
