Littleton NH
Lawrence Underhill, February 15, 1940~October 5th 2021
He arrived at just over 4 Lbs to Stephen and Helen (Manchester) Underhill in the early hours of February 15, 1940 and left peacefully in the early hours of October 5, 2021, surrounded by his family to be reunited with his daughter Cathleen.
The sum of the man he was cannot be put into just these few words. He was a husband to Nancy for 61 years but declared his love for her in the 6th grade, and started to court her in the 8th grade bicycling her around on the crossbars of his bike.
in 1962 he graduated from UNH and returned to the family farm in Piermont NH.
He was a father and grandfather, natural leader and mentor who willingly shared his love of any activity done in Nature including hiking, hunting, fishing, conservation and sustainable Agriculture practices.
His legacy includes more awards than can be listed. He was a supporter of his community, any community he belonged to, starting with 4-H, and FFA in his youth. He represented his town and State nationally on more than one occasion.
At 35 he became the NH State Farm Bureau President. When he returned to farming full time, he was a town selectman, town Moderator and a volunteer firefighter.
He went to work for the USDA when he sold the farm. He loved reconnecting with people he had known from Farm Bureau. He continued to be active in his community, volunteering at the Hospital and working on expanding and improving the COOS trail.
This is only a tiny representation of his many contributions. When we asked friends and family what words they would use to describe him, these were them in no particular order.
Mentor, friend, father figure, steadfast, humble, patient, storyteller, kind, loyal, soft spoken, Leader, dedicated to conservation, a family man, teacher, curious, peacemaker, unassuming and generous. He was generous and selfless with his love, knowledge, wisdom and time, if he could share it he would do so willingly.
The biggest lesson he leaves us with is to always do your best, do what you know is right regardless of what anyone thinks or says, and be happy and get along with each other. Have fun, create memories and cerate a little mischief and lots of memories like he did with his cousin and lifelong friend, Douglas Underhill.
There are no services at his request. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice that reminds you of him in some way.
Take a hike, help a neighbor, call someone you know is alone or even better take them out for a ride and eat ice cream.
He was loved by many, respected by anyone that knew him, and missed beyond measure. You left your footprints here on our hearts and on the mountains you so loved. You earned your wings, fly high. With Love, Nancy, Correna, Cynthia, Calvin, Douglas, Christopher and Kimberly.
Hale Funeral Home in Bradford is humbled to be entrusted with Lawrence’s care.
