Obituary for Mae Lillian (Lindberg) Newton
Lebanon, NH – Mae Lillian Newton, age 99, passed away peacefully at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care in Lebanon, NH on December 12, 2022, while she was surrounded by her loving family. Mae was born in Barkarkara, Sweden on February 23, 1923 and moved to the United States via Ellis Island at the age of 9 months, with her parents and 4 sisters. She was a student of the first graduating class at North Arlington High School, North Arlington, NJ in 1940. After high school Mae joined the workforce as a keypunch operator in Newark, NJ. While she worked, Mae was waiting for the love of her life, Dan Newton, to return from his service in the Army, during WWII, in Europe. Upon Dan’s return from the war, she married her high school sweetheart on December 29, 1945. Together they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in 2016 before the passing of her beloved husband. Mae was a member of the auxiliary of the North Arlington Lions Club for many years. She also taught Sunday School at the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of a special sorority with a group of high school friends throughout her adult life and was the last living member. Mae participated in league bowling which she enjoyed with her husband Dan and many friends. Mae, Dan and their youngest son moved to VT in 1975 and built their new home on Turkey Hill located in the village of Corinth, VT. Mae and Dan moved to Bradford, VT during their senior years and Mae always enjoyed maintaining her gardens in her homes in Corinth and Bradford. Mae and Dan enjoyed putting puzzles together and playing cards and games with family and friends. For many years they also enjoyed annual cross-country road trips. After the death of her husband, Dan, in 2017, Mae resided both with her daughters’ family in Warren, Maine and her sons’ families in Fairlee, VT. She continued to enjoy puzzling and card games to the amazement of her family, even at the age of 99. Mae is survived by son, Donald M Newton and wife Joyce of Fairlee, Vt; son, Kenneth L Newton and wife Eileen of Fairlee, VT; daughter, Janice A Mueller and husband George of Warren, Maine; son, Richard D Newton and wife Cathleen of West Hartford, VT; 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Burial will take place at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Randolph Center, VT on May 26, 2023 at 1 pm, Pastor Dick Hodge officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to organizations of choice. The family of Mae Lillian Newton wishes to thank family and friends for a lifetime of special memories.
