Martha Mendenhall Daum, 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 2 in her home at Wheelock Terrace in Hanover, NH.
Martha was originally from Wilmington, Delaware. She was a longtime resident of Media, PA; later moving to Springfield, VT; then finally settling in a home she and her husband, Roger Daum, built on Lake Fairlee in Post Mills, VT.
Martha’s life was dedicated to the service of others; first as an educator and then as a Registered Nurse. She was very involved in her church communities, participating in church choirs, teaching in Sunday School and Vacation Bible Schools, as well as participating in a variety of other church activities. As a committed volunteer, she was instrumental in the formation of the Thetford Elder Network and was a longtime proponent of Parish and Community Nursing. She mentored children during Everybody Wins reading sessions at Westshire Elementary, and volunteered with VNA of VT Hospice programs. After retiring she joined her husband, Pastor Roger Daum, in service to both the Post Mills Congregational Church, and the West Fairlee Congregational Church.
Her intelligence, warmth and sense of humor were quietly there in all she did. Never seeking the spotlight, but always there for support. She was often described as lovely and giving, with a smile that would brighten anyone’s day.
Martha loved her family and enjoyed seeing her children and grandchildren gather at the lake. She adored and deeply loved her husband, Roger, through their over 50 years of marriage. They shared a love of music and intellectual curiosity, as well as many other things. Other loves were the outdoors, her many dogs and cats, feeding the birds, singing, art, and especially chocolate.
Predeceased by her husband Roger Daum, and son Lawrence Daum. Survived by her children, Mary Daum, John Daum, Catherine Daum Clement, 10 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service in celebration of Martha’s life will be held Saturday, December 17 at 11:00am in the Post Mills Congregational Church, Post Mills, Vermont, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Martha’s desire that we should share our wealth and do good for others, we kindly ask that you make a donation to an organization of your choosing.
