- Mary Lucille Martin Sanborn, 90, of Bradford, VT, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023, at her home. Mary was born on October 29, 1933, and was the oldest child of Willard and Eleanor Martin, of East Corinth, Vermont.
She attended East Corinth Grammar School and graduated with honors and the Good Citizenship Girl of the class of 1951, from Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont. A member of the class of 1955 at the University of Vermont, she was a member of the social sorority Alpha Chi Omega, as well as being active in campus organizations.
On May 20, 1955, she married William Sanborn Jr., and they had five children: Susan, Rachel, Anne Marie, William III, and Martin. Mary taught school in Columbus, Georgia; Barre, Burlington, Essex Jct., Vershire, Waits River, and Bradford, all in Vermont. She was always active in her community and church, serving on boards, committees, and doing volunteer work.
She loved caring for her grandchildren. Working with children, beginning as the oldest of five; then babysitting, being a camp counselor for crippled children; teaching school, having five children; and nine grandchildren were all a great source of satisfaction for Mary. Words that Mary lived by were “actions speak louder than words”, “I never had a child let me down – only adults”, and “Wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now”.
Mary is survived by her five children; Susan of Albany, NY; Rachel of Newport News, Virginia; Anne Marie and Bill Wyckoff of Thousand Oaks, CA; Bill and Darlene Sanborn of Bradford, and Martin also of Bradford. She also leaves nine grandchildren; Evan, Aaron, Natalie, Bryce, Chelsea, Joshua, Cole, Taylor, and Will.
As per Mary’s request, there will be no visiting hours or church service. There will be a graveside service at the family lot in Sawyer Cemetery in Bradford on May 11, 2024, at 1:00 pm. A celebration of life will be held at Bradford Congregational Church immediately after.
Donations in Mary’s Memory can be made to Bradford United Church of Christ, Congregational, or a charity of ones choosing.
Arrangements are in the care of Hale Funeral Home, 187 Upper Plain in Bradford.
